Read Full Article →Assembly Advances Legislation to Protect the Public from Fake, AI 'Doctors' - AB 489 (Bonta)
SACRAMENTO, CA – The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) California today applauded State Assemblymembers for supporting AB 489 (Bonta), a bill to protect the public from Artificial Intelligence that misleads the public into thinking we are interacting with a licensed health professional. The bill now goes to the Senate for referral to a policy committee. SEIU California released the following statement from Seema Kanani, a medical social worker in Milpitas, following today's vote on the bill: "Artificial Intelligence is a tool that licensed healthcare professionals can use to great effect: enhancement in medical imagining, genetic data, and electronic health records analysis have saved lives by predicting patients who may be vulnerable to sepsis and identifying breast cancer earlier, for example. But AI cannot replace the skill and expertise of a licensed healthcare professional. AI chatbots can easily imitate medical language and convince patients they are speaking to a licensed health professional. It is critical that patients are protected against AI that could guide them to making decisions that could compromise their treatment – or their lives. As a union of health care workers and members who count on our families being safe in the health care system, we thank Assemblymember Bonta for putting patients' health first with AB 489. We also applaud the Assemblymembers who voted to protect lives and strengthen patient-provider trust by advancing this bill to the Senate."
